Less than a month to the Farmer’s Market in Puyallup!

In previous summers, we have enjoyed coming to the market every Saturday, June through August, and sometimes into the fall. This year, since I now live about 1 and a half hours away, we are just doing the market on the first Saturday of each month – maybe adding a few days here and there. This year we will just have 1 tent, but we are planning on filling it full of new items – including a new variety of items for little boys.

Meet Terri Beloit, Photographer located in Puyallup

If you have been a fan of our on Facebook, you have probably seen me post links to Terri Beloit’s Photography Blog and Website.  She is located in Puyallup, and Kiki and I met her while she was shopping at the Puyallup Farmers Market, where we are vendors.  She purchased a Tutu and some hats and headbands, and she showed us some pictures she had taken using our products.  We have met with her a couple times to have pictures taken of our girls wearing our products, and we have developed a friendship.  If you are looking for a photographer in Western Washington, take a moment to consider Terri – she takes amazing photographs, and she is so great to work with!

Tutorial: Hand Stamping Sterling Silver

Hand Stamped Sterling Silver Jewelry

(originally published on my PNN page)
My latest addiction – once I learned how to make my own hand stamped sterling silvery jewelry (so easy!) I knew I had to share it with the world. One thing I learned while trying to find information on this craft was that it is hard to find information about it! :) This tutorial will outline the basic tools you need, and help you get started with how to use your tools.

Basic Tools:
You will need a mallet (or for a deeper impression, use a regular weight hammer), steel bench block, 600 grit sandpaper, polishing pads, design stamp (I use a snowflake stamp in this tutorial), black permanent marker (for the oxidizing look), 1/2 inch 24 gauge sterling silver disc, 1.7mm hole punch pliers, a sterling silver jump ring (sizes vary, use the size that you like best) and a necklace chain (I am using an 18″ 1.2mm sterling silver ball chain.
Okay, after seeing that list, you should be getting the idea that this is not an inexpensive hobby/craft. It will take a little investment in the beginning, but it will pay off when you are creating beautiful pendants that people charge a lot of money for.
Okay- let’s get started!
Step 1: Start by placing your sterling silver disc on the steel bench block. Place your design stamp carefully in the desired place on the disk. For this small pendant, I’ll place the design slightly below the middle of the disc, so that when the hole is punch on the top, it still looks centered.
Step 2: Firmly hit your mallet against the design stamp several times, to ensure your design has been stamped into the sterling silver disc. You want to make sure you get it right the first time – otherwise, it would be difficult to place it perfectly back on top of the design to stamp it again.  Again, if you want a deeper impression, use a regular weight hammer instead of the mallet.
Step 3: Using your hole punch pliers, place your disc in the hole punch, lining the disc up so that the hole will be place properly. Squeeze the punch tightly – if you don’t do this correctly, you could end up damaging the disc, and you’ll want to start all over again.

Step 4: This is the step that makes your design image pop off of the disc – to give your silver the “oxidized” look, we’re going to cheat a little by using a black permanent marker to mark in the grooves of the design. When you are done, it will look something like the picture at right.
Step 5: Use the fine grit sandpaper to smooth off all edges of the disc, and then follow it up with the polishing pad. As you work the polishing pad over the design area, it will polish off the excess black marker, leaving your disc beautifully polished and your design will stand out on the disc.

Step 6: Add your jump ring and necklace chain (or you could make several of these and add them to a charm bracelet), and you are finished! Here is an up-close picture of my finished product. This particular sized disc also works well for single letter.
What do you think of this tutorial? Was it easy to follow? I love getting feedback, so please feel free to comment!

My daughter is in love with Bob Blob

If you haven’t seen Monsters vs Aliens, you are missing out.  My daughter is in love with this movie – in fact, it’s the only movie that hasn’t been moved to the new house.  She doesn’t call the movie by it’s real name, she refers to is as Bob Blob, since her favorite character is Bob (who happens to be a blob)

Classic Maddy/Bob blob moments:

***In the beginning when Susan gets hit by the meteor, Maddy always says (with her hands in the air) “What happened?”  Then when Susan appears, Maddy exclaims “There she is!”

***When the President goes to meet the Alien intruder, and starts to play the piano, Maddy stops what she is doing, and instantly shakes her booty, insisting I dance with her as well.  Once the music stops, and the President is breathing heavily, Maddy starts panting, too.

***When the guy is running to the meeting with the President, and has to pass all the security checks, she always giggles when he has to do the “butt scan” and says “heart on his buns, Mama!”

Throughout the movie, she wonders where Bob is, and if she can’t find him, she tells me he is napping.

I am hoping that they come out with a Monsters vs Aliens 2, because I would love to take her to see it in the theaters.  She was a little too little to see it when this one was out in the theaters.  We didn’t even buy the movie until after the Monsters vs Aliens Halloween special came out, and I was forced to watch that 30 minute special over and over again…

Anyways, I hope you enjoy it too.  This has nothing to do with crafting, but something I had to share.

Who is Kiwi?

I am Kiwi from ‘Kiwi and Kiki’  I am the older sister, and the one who started this whole thing.  I convinced my sister to start selling her hair accessories so we could be a team, and I would have some help at the Farmer’s Market that I sold at during the summer.  There are some changes ahead for Kiwi and Kiki – I am moving, which will separate us by almost 2 hours.  So, we probably won’t be doing any Farmer’s Markets together in the future, at least on a regular basis.  Kiki has welcomed a new baby in this world (Abby) so she  now has 2 at home which makes crafting a little more difficult.  So for now, I am venturing into this stuff alone.  I have lots of things on the way, so I am looking forward to unpacking my craft room and getting to work again.  Thanks for checking out this blog!  I am planning on blogging about my moving adventures, small town living adventures, and all of my crafting endeavors.  I hope to add in a tutorial or two, and to highlight some of my favorite other hand-crafting mamas!  Enjoy!

Hello world!

The beginnings of my Blog.  I am moving to a small town – for the first time in my life!  It will be interesting settling in and finding out what it’s like to live in a small town.  My craft room is divided between two houses right now – my current house, and the house we are moving into.  I have the neat and tidy boxes moved, and what’s left of my craft room now is the boxes of mismatched stuff that I desperately need to sort through and yet I have been avoiding doing it forever.  I will have to face the music soon, though.  In two weeks we will be sleeping in the new house, so I better get it ready soon!
